Planting a Second Mulberry Tree

Now that the chicken pen was built it was up to me to plant the trees that i had an opportunity to have help with but shifted off due to something else being more important and requiring finished first. I was way more confident that i could dig holes for trees than i was that i could get the chicken pen done in a timely manner so now it was just about getting up, getting out there, and doing it. I dug this hole in 2 hours instead of 4. It was pre-dug, it just had another tree in it at the time so i had to get the dead one out and then pull all of the roots out of there with the shovel and pick axe. I did make good time with this one. So much so that i got enthusiastic and decided to start on another hole. That one had more established tree roots and by then it was really hot out and i nearly overheated and turned bright red like a crab all over, had to lay down on the ground and then wet my clothes and lay on the floor in the house in the a/c for about forty minutes. Basically its usually cooler by this time of year but its been unseasonably warm. The highs were still in the low nineties at this point and by the time i decided to dig the second hole it wasnt nice and cool anymore. I did get a second wind at one point when my skin color returned to white and i’d hydrated a bit. I didnt think i was going to finish the hole that day but i thought i could maybe at least get half way to digging out a hole for one of the pecan trees. The hole was inundated with really ornery tree roots that had seriously anchored in there and i could not get them out. I was really trying with the pick axe when i got too low to the ground and brought the pick axe down, a piece of rebar going up through my middle finger. It was immediately clear to me that this was bad since there appeared to be a small but deep hole in the side of my finger where this piece of the end of the rebar was sticking out from where i’d hammered it into the ground and a little piece of the metal had jutted out after repeated hammering into the rock…which quickly filled up with dirt/rust and blood. I dropped what i was doing and immediately went to the well house spigot where i washed the rust out of the wound for a long time. I decided i was probably done. I cleaned up my mess and called it a day. It was probably a sign that i was supposed to be done.
The mulberry tree was in the ground. Now there were just the two pecan trees and the non-fruiting trees that were left in pots. I would tend to them another weekend. (I wouldnt. I would run out of time and they would have to be left for next year because there wasnt enough time for the roots to spread and establish in a new hole before hard freezes were possible).
The hole in my finger actually ended up developing an infection and tunneling. It became red, inflamed, and very painful. Once i started treating hourly with raw organic coconut oil the infection dissipated within 3 days and it took another couple weeks for the edges to start pulling in and the hole to become shallower until it finally developed a scab shaped like half an egg shell and then became detached enough for me to pick it off one day. I still have a random pink spot on the side of my finger but its completely healed and im very glad it stopped tunneling and that i dont need any tetanus shots. (Maybe learned my lesson about working near rebar…dont).

A Country Solution

I’m currently covering my coworker’s maternity leave which means i’m seeing her patients and my boss is seeing his and my patients. We are one man down so i cant exactly call in and say i need a day off to go handle a dog thing. I usually order my flea and heart-worm meds from a company that takes a good amount of time shipping them but due to recent policy changes has now doubled the price. It has forced me to look for a more in person solution to the problem of how to obtain flea and heart-worm meds for my dogs for the coming year. I had two remaining doses of each chew. Now, if i just needed a medication refill i could pay via phone and the vet tech would leave the meds in her mailbox and i’d just grab them on the way home as she lived in a town i passed through to get from the one where i worked to the town where i live. However, in this country a heartworm test is required every year in order to obtain heartworm meds, which i think is stupid and i’ll explain why, but regardless it doesnt change the fact that it is needed. Now, if your dogs have been on a heartworm preventative that you faithfully gave them 12 times in the last year, each time making sure they had a full meal first and were in for the night so there’s no chance they could go throw it up somewhere and thus not get the benefit of the medicine….do you think that test is going to be negative or positive? Its never in their lives been positive, because its actually impossible for it to be positive if the meds do in fact work, which is why we’re buying them, right? Lets play devil’s advocate here and say i was somehow overnight turned into a non-ocd person that just haphazardly breezes through life without checking or chronicling things and i forgot to give them their heart-worm chews one month. Well, the medicated chews kill juvenile heart-worms. They cant kill adult heart-worms but they do kill juvenile heart-worms. If the infestation is new…the worms would still be young. You would literally have to forget several months in a row to land them heart-worm positive on a test. Most people i know who adopted heart-worm positive dogs actually chose just to give them a couch potato style life until the infestation was clear and put them on preventative because the drugs to treat a full blown heart-worm infestation can actually be taxing on the dog’s heart. Most decide they’d rather have what time they can with them than maybe kill them now. At that point you’re basically waiting out the lifespan of the adult worms which are doing damage and putting stress on the dog’s heart until the end of their life cycle and you hope that they die before too much damage is done. The treatment for a heart-worm infestation is also expensive which is another reason people out here opt out of treating and just stick to preventative to kill additional spawning generations of worms. But, it doesnt matter how much i point out the flawed logic in the gate keeping of vital preventative dog meds in the name of useless tests that change nothing about the behavior outcome…it is still the law. So, we had to play ball and go get a blood draw before we could be a responsible pet owner this year. The problem was, the vet was only open monday through friday and they were neither in the town where i lived nor in the town where i worked. They were half way between. So, i would only have time to work a half day if i had to run the dogs all the way back home and then come all the way back the other direction to make it to work. I decided there was nothing to do but hope my coworker returned from her maternity leave before january because december 1 would be the dogs’ last dose in the house. That was cutting it close for the usually over-prepared me that orders six months in advance before running out… but, financial reasons and gate keeping drove the situation as the price for meds had increased double since i bought them last from my regular source.
Long story short, the country vet came to my rescue. He said he was making a grocery run to the lowes market in the nearest town on saturday and he could bring his pickup which he called the “vet truck” with a little mat in the bed of the truck and some boxes full of vet supplies and he’d park it in his vet tech’s yard who lived in the town where the lowes market was and i could just shuttle the dogs to this town (the closest one to me) and he’d put each one in the truck bed temporarily for a quick blood draw and he could do the test and sell me a year’s worth of flea and heart-worm meds right there in the vet tech’s yard. The question was, did i think my dogs would do it. What they were asking was, if we didnt have the table with the collar hold to keep them in a specific position, would they hold still and not bite the vet or the vet tech holding them on the mat on the open truck bed? I was pretty sure they could both be coaxed into a state of “i’m a good girl.” So i said yes they’d be able to do it and we’d just have to give them the command “load up.” Since that was what they’d been trained with.
At 10:00 i said to both dogs, “load up” and gestured towards the open car door. Sili jumped into the back seat of the car. Cashew ran right past the open car door and around the back of the car. She then took a running leap straight into the trunk door and window. It was not open. She bent the rear wiper slightly as she perched momentarily on it and pushed off of the window with her claws, quickly improvising some sort of parkour move as if she had meant to run smack into a closed trunk window. I just stood there stunned, pulling at my jaw thinking, “wtf dog?” As she frantically searched for where her sister went i pointed towards the continuously open back door of the car. Sili stuck her head out to see if Cashew was okay. Cashew then spotted her and it was like a lightbulb went off in her head and she scurried over and jumped into the back seat. I closed the door behind them and inspected the rear wiper on the car. It was a bit bent but it was still making contact with the glass and i bet it will still run. I shook my head. My crazy wild child. They were polar opposites but i loved them both equally for different reasons.
At 11 we arrived in the vet tech’s yard. She and her husband were standing in the yard next to the vet truck. They came and greeted me. I left the car running for the a/c and greeted them and the vet…thanked them for letting us meet in her yard on a saturday and bringing the tests with him. I got each dog out one at a time. The vet tech’s held the dog on the truck bed mat while i smooshed their face and ears in my exaggerated petting and showered them with kisses and “you’re a good girl, yes you are” praise so they wouldnt squirm or nip the vet. Each one behaved perfectly. Cashew was a bit squirmy but thats more because she’s an australian shepherd than because she was scared. She never stops moving. She’s like a ball of energy. Both of them did well and didnt nip at all. We lifted each down and the vet tech offered a treat each time. Cashew is always so overstimulated in new situations she could care less about food. She wants an “at a girl” more than anything in the world. On the other end of the spectrum was sili who will gage whether you are pleased with her or not by how many treats you shower her with. Cashew predictably took and dropped her treat and paid the second one the same amount of attention. She ignored all attempts at food reward. I gave her some big thumps on her side and told her “what a good girl! What a good good girl you are!” Her stubby tail went into hyper drive and you could see the words wash over her as she seemed to say “yeah i am, im a really good girl! Mom said i was a good girl!” She was loving it. Cashew never needs a treat. Your approval is worth 1000 treats to her. Sili however needed only one suggestion to enjoy a nice chewy treat for her efforts and she would go ahead and take care of cashew’s treats too just so there wouldnt be a mess in the grass you know. She was very dainty about it but she scarfed down the little red and brown discs with purpose once she had each one picked up. I put both dogs in the back seat and then the vet held up the little rectangular discs and said “well, nobody’s pregnant.” I laughed. They did look like little mini pregnancy tests. The vet tech said, “they’re both heart-worm negative. Then they asked if i wanted to pay by check or phone. I paid by phone and they handed me a bag containing a year’s worth of flea and heart-worm meds for both dogs. I thanked them for making an exception and meeting me on a saturday so they could get their preventatives before my coworker came back from maternity leave. The vet thanked me for what i do. He said, “i hope i never need your services but thank you for what you do.” It meant the world to me. It was so kind. Working in healthcare is more complicated than working elsewhere when it comes to taking a day off. Yes you have vacation days. Technically you accrue them, but the patients have to be seen, so you have to find someone to cover your hours if you are going to take a day off, and finding ethical help is harder to do than it sounds. Just because a person has a license does not mean they are going to be kind and responsible with your patients and you dont want to put them in a situation where they are getting neglected or abused by agency workers because you needed a day off. Why agency workers are usually disgruntled and checked out has to do with the fact that the agency who provided them is taking a cut of their wages and there was something wrong to begin with that forced them into a circumstance where they had to take a contract job in a city other than the one where they live with their families. Its not always this way, but it is usually. Since the agency worker also doesnt belong to the facility but to the agency, the facility management cant fire them either, which does little to motivate them to abide by facility rules or have good interdisciplinary verbal collaboration. For example, at one point in my career a patient appeared to be in crisis and going downhill fast. I identified immediately that he was in crisis and needed to go to the hospital. The agency worker told me and the patient’s wife that i had made a rookie mistake and not warmed the hand before using the device to measure the vitals and thus got an inaccurate reading. After years in the medical field i know that an electronic device is not the only way to tell if a patient’s vitals are off. You can use your eyeballs because there will be signs of the patient’s distress. The agency nurse put me in a regrettable position because i knew after examining the patient with my eyeballs that i wasnt wrong about his vitals and she had to be flat out delusional to think he was within functional limits and there was no possible way that she got the reading that she said she got because i was looking at a patient whose respirations, skin color, and sweating situation were not correct. Also their cognitive function was still compromised and they could barely keep enough air to make a sentence. I spelled it out for the wife as best i could without flat-out calling the agency nurse a liar…which probably would have resulted in a write up or termination. There’s ways to go about things, but i was trying to communicate to her that her husband was in danger without making it so i could never help another patient again. I told the wife that i knew what the nurse said but that i had to base my conclusions on observation and what years of experience had taught me, and regardless of what the monitor did or did not say, he was still presenting as a person, he was showing physical signs of a person who was having difficulty breathing, having a low oxygen sat. I turned to her and said, “theres no way we can do therapy today. He’s struggling to breathe and if i make him exercise while he’s doing that he’s just going to get worse.” I looked at her, hoping i could communicate the seriousness of the situation without saying outright “she’s a lying ass and i dont trust her.” I said, “if his symptoms get any worse, get the nurse immediately.” For all i know, she could’ve gotten the nurse and the nurse could have told her it was nothing again. For four hours i went through the chain of command as policy dictated it was all i could do if i wanted to keep my career. I told my direct supervisors. I told the directors of both buildings. I told the physical therapy assistant, the speech therapist. I told anyone who would listen in my department, what i had seen and what the nurse said and what i believed and why. Why i believed she was wrong. I knew i was right. After years in the field, you dont f***ing miss what impending death looks like. Finally the speech therapist was the one who risked her career to go over the nurse’s head. Upper management was involved when his o2 sat was beyond critical. They were notified that this was the situation going on and she wanted to make them aware of it because several employees disagreed with the nurse’s assessment of the situation and if he died, the consequences of the negligent decision would not only be on her but on everyone above her who allowed her to make said decision. Upper management responded immediately, took one look at the patient, and ordered him sent one city over to the big hospital immediately. He was intubated.
I was livid. Several lower employees toyed with the idea of ending our careers to override her anyway but were reminded that if we did so, we’d be taken from the other patients who needed our longterm care. No, things had to be done a certain way. The information had to be handed to the higher ups above her and they had to make their own decision. Fortunately, management agreed with me, not her, and they sent him, but look at all the time that was wasted because of f***ing agency. I said, “i mean i dont care…i literally dont care if you’re gonna be typical agency and be super mean and bitchy to me every time i have to communicate with you. I dont care. But if you’re not gonna f***ing help the patients, f*ck you.” She said, “ no, now stop that. Don’t get fired.” She said, “i try and give her the benefit of the doubt. Maybe she was going through something. Maybe she’s having a really bad day and cant cope.” I said, “then you drop the ball on literally everything else. If you’re nursing, you dont drop the ball on medication, and you dont drop the ball on people who are dying. Drop the ball on literally everything else if you dont have the bandwidth. We all work here, and we all have bad days. We’ve had days where we dropped the ball on paperwork, coworker interdisciplinary verbal relations, meetings, inservices, freaking parking the car or remembering to put the scrubs on right side out or even packing a lunch. Drop the ball on f***ing everything else, but you dont mess up with dying people, you dont mess up when someone has fallen and split their skull, you dont mess up a beeping blood sugar monitor. You put your stressors from home and your coworker differences aside and you f***ing find the peel-back foil orange juice cups, apply pressure to the head wound, start cpr, hold the door and direct the emts while another nurse gets the packet ready to go with the patient to the hospital and another employee clears the area of healthy patients who need to be occupied with something else and another nurse calls the family and notifies them of which hospital to meet the emts at. You f***ing get your shit together and serve the f***ing patients and you can continue sucking and falling apart when you get off shift.” Its at this point that two of my coworkers remind me of my rank and tell me to calm the f*ck down and stop saying the f word. I dont have a right rank wise to be this livid about the matter. But i am, because im familiar with agency. Its just a f***ing paycheck to them and they dont care what they ruin because they’re not in it because its their calling. They’re in it for the money. If their work was good, a company in their hometown would hire them and they wouldnt have to work agency. I was sick of these people having access to MY patients and not being able to tell the patient their nurse was an incompetent idiot. He was MY patient, the same as he was speech’s patient, physical therapy’s patient, and the family’s patient, because we cared, and had it been a regular nurse, they would have cared too. I said quietly but in a stern voice, “if he dies, his death is on her hands.” My coworker looked stunned that i’d said it but without protest, agreed. As i told my coworkers that day, “nursing is a calling. You have to be wired for it. Some are, some arent. If you cant check all your shit at the door to the developing crisis and f***ing show up to the situation, you shouldnt be in charge of human beings. Go work at the grocery where the worst that can happen is smashed or spoiled food or unidentified bob (items at the bottom of the basket that cant be seen from behind the conveyor).” So, even though i look like a glorified babysitter teaching elders to dress and toilet themselves and guiding them in arm exercises, i cant take a day off because id create a situation in which people who should not have access to my patients now have access to my patients. If my coworker needs a day off, i’ll cover her. If i need a day off, she’ll cover me, because they’re “our” patients and we’d both tend to them as if their lives were precious and advocate for them loudly in a crisis but on maternity leave…everyone stay healthy and stay put so agency isnt needed. So the vet looking me in the eye and thanking me for what i do, being willing to see me and my dogs in his pickup bed on a saturday so i can still do what i do…it meant the world to me, because i knew he meant it. And i in turn thanked him for what he does, which i find equally important. I take care of of elders. He takes care of animals…livestock and pets. The world would be a very different place without both professions. And he is one for whom this is a calling. I am grateful for the truck bed examination and a year’s worth of dog meds. I am grateful that this country vet gave a country solution to a healthcare problem because you know no city vet would be driving to a nearby town to see my dogs on the way to a weekend supply run at the nearest grocery.

Constructing the Second Chicken Pen

I should probably start at the beginning. The chicken coop was about 5 and a half years old at the point where it began sagging around the nesting box area and pieces of wood on the front of it as well as parts of the door began falling off. I knew the carpenter ants had been munching on it and the weather had been wearing it down for over five years and it was finally past the point of plaster repair to where enough things were falling off at once that i couldnt paste it back together fast enough and it probably just needed replaced. I knew it was now drafty enough that the chickens couldnt winter in it and so something would have to be done. My neighbor volunteered himself to help. I tried to say that was okay, i had it, but he insisted he could be of much needed help. Thinking that i could use a hand if i thought about it, i accepted his offer. Very quickly i began to regret doing so. He decided that we needed a metal roof. I said i didnt have any metal or know how to construct one, or what to even attach it to and with what method. He said he did and that i didnt need to. He had a vision and he knew how to make it come to fruition. Pretty soon i started hearing the plan was to drill holes in the metal structure of the pen i had, which i wasnt thrilled about because it was nice and study without holes drilled in the metal poles and panels and i wasnt sure it would be after we were done drilling holes. Then it was that i needed to get metal roofing from a lumber yard. Id never done business with a lumber yard, nor did i have a truck with which to transport the metal, but he did. This project was gradually becoming less and less my brain child and more and more his. I usually put the chickens inside a stock tank in the house so they could be climate controlled in the air conditioner while i worked on their pen, so i wouldnt be rushed and could take my time in making repairs or constructing things. He didnt like this idea. He didnt want the chickens inside my house because they’d make a mess so he brought over a large wire cage that was meant to go in the dog run under a tree until we were finished. This complicated things for me because now i’d forever be trying to keep the dogs from eating chicken poop and bird seed once they were removed from the dog run and i’d have less time to finish what i was doing as the birds would be stressed and hot in the confined cage as the sun got higher in the sky and the hours of the day wore on. He didnt think about the reasons behind the way i did things. He just thought his priorities and his reasons were smarter and better. He really didnt ask for the reasons behind the way i did things and he just repeated that his way would work better when i protested that i wanted it done my way because that was the way i had planned to do it. Sometimes in the country when you have men and women working on a project together the men assume the women have just been doing something a certain way because its all they could think to come up with and now that the big brains and real skills are on scene, things can get done in a better and more efficient way. However, the main reasons behind the way i do things are usually directly related to my priorities surrounding animals and safety and my ever present priority to construct something i can understand, build, and maintain myself without having to hire a professional or ask for help. Independence is important to me.
Next it was decided that instead of taking a sledgehammer to the rotting chicken coop in the pen, pulling the pieces out one by one, and building the new coop inside the pen so i wouldnt have to take the pen apart (with an elaborately created heavy duty tarp roof with thousands of zip ties and rope ties and an attached buried metal wire fencing around the whole thing) he’d take the roof off or take a couple panels off and use a tractor to chain and pull the old coop out and lower the new coop in. I didnt want this because i felt it would damage my fort Knox pen i’d created and i could already see where the chained new coop was a fragilely constructed thing from china that would probably shift in the process of lowering and then come apart in some way and require repairs. But, he had his mind made up that his way was best. Every once in a while he’d say, “i mean whatever way you want to do im fine with” and then when i’d say that in that case i wanted my way, he’d just insist his way was going to be better. I felt his statement was a false offering because when i tried to take him up on his expressed flexibility, it didnt seem to exist. This particular neighbor provided me with a lot of help over the past year and i cant say it wasnt helpful. It was and i appreciate him. However, it came at a cost. I lost my independence and i lost the spirit of why i moved out here in the first place; to have a piece of land where i could do things my way, whatever that may be, and foster a sense of independence and resilience. Its fine to have friends but you should make sure that good boundaries are in place and that one portion of your life doesnt bleed into many others and take over. I was used to an independent existence where no one checked up on me or really needed to know where i was and what i was doing throughout the day or night. I was used to a certain level of solitude and privacy. The more help i accepted the more i seemed to lose this right to privacy and alone time. Socialization became a daily requirement and i was feeling smothered. I felt i had lost ownership over my own land and life as the decisions were no longer being driven by me and i was not the entity guarding, protecting, or addressing intruders on my land. Someone else was. I knew my name was on the title to the land but i felt like i’d lost ownership and become a 2 acre portion of a larger lot down the street. It had begun innocently but i found myself losing more than i was willing to part with in order to keep the friendship. I felt obligated to be flexible because the person had done so much for me. I started to wonder if this was the design. My friend seemed to know where i was and what i was doing at all times and he kept saying he saw me when i didnt see any trace of him and it was freaking me out. I felt like i had no privacy. I felt like the woods were no longer secluded. The last straw for me was a morning in which i lost my last semblance of privacy, i ended up having to deal with the consequences of having an opinion that differed with his and that was that i slid down on the priority list and now i had to wait until he’d done two other jobs to even get started so the chickens would sit in the heat in that small pen without a coop for hours because i hadnt played nice. I went back and forth on what to do but ultimately all i could conclude was that i was stuck having to play nice and submissive because the project had now evolved into something that i couldnt do by myself. I didnt have a tractor, chain, or any idea how to put on and secure a metal roof. I was furious that i had lost the ability to control projects on my property as i was not married and i was the boss here, and i usually called the shots and things happened on my timeline, and that was how i designed it and wanted it to stay. The loss of privacy and need to know where i was and what i was doing all the time was a problem but the constant deference of power and waiting on another person’s timeline and priorities which seemed to be dictated by my own behavior…i was done. I was done having my behavior manipulated by a desire to get a project done. I had to be me and do me, regardless of the consequences. That fact i knew, but i could not figure out how to salvage this project for the chickens by the coming of winter. The chicken coop was already built, because he wanted to build it on the outside of the pen rather than inside like i had wanted. So now i really didnt have a way to get it in the pen without a tractor and taking apart some portion of the pen. I paced around the yard until it hit me. **** the pen. I would buy a new pen and construct it around the already built new chicken coop. I would dig a new trench, cut new fencing, bury it, make a new rock wall on top, and put a new roof on. It would be costly and a lot of work, but i’d regain my independence, not have to rely on someone else to do things for me, and have it exactly how i wanted for me and my priorities. I made a decision and that was that. That was the new plan. I politely notified the neighbor that i appreciated his help up until that point but i’d decided to go in a new direction and was going to leave the pen and just construct a second pen so i could have twice the chickens eventually and wouldnt have to worry about dealing with that rotting coop for now. I told him i no longer required his help and asked him not to come. Suddenly i shot to the top of the priority list and contrary to my request, he came straight to the property to get started. I had chained the gate because i did not want company. He unchained the gate and let himself in despite my request for him not to come to the property and the chained gate he was met with. He had become too comfortable overriding my wishes and i had to do something to reset my life the way i’d had it before he had entered it as a friend. Our friendship ended that day when it became apparent to me that he could not respect my boundaries or wishes. I hope he has a good life and great times with good friends and has all the success and happiness in the world. He’s done a lot of good for people and should have good things in life. I have no reason to wish anything ill towards him. I just cant be a part of that life. We want different things and i suspect some of our needs and ideas are in direct contradiction with each other.
A friend and former coworker living in san antonio was scheduled to come out to the property within the next month. She had wanted to help me dig some holes to plant the fruit trees i had sitting in pots on the porch. I now had a big ask. I asked her if she’d help me hold the fence panels to construct a new chicken pen around the already built new chicken coop. It would be an all day and labor intensive project…not much fun. It was a huge ask and i wasnt sure why anyone would say yes. But she did. Without hesitation she agreed to come help me erect a new chicken pen. Now i had a plan that was coming together. I just had to figure out logistically how to bring it to fruition by the time i had her scheduled to come out to the property. I made a run to the nearest town with a tractor supply in it and bought a pen and some supplies needed for the project. I bought a new pick axe at a hardware store. I paid for the pen but i didnt have a truck to pick it up and transport it in and enterprise couldnt rent me one for a month. I began calling everyone i knew who lived in that town with a truck. I did locate someone who had a truck and agreed to pick ip the pen the following day and deliver it to my property after work on monday because he worked in my town. Everything seemed to be set up pretty well until he called me after church to say that they had sold me the pen but didnt actually have one. They would have to get a nearby city to run one down from their store. I asked if they could just take apart the floor model in the parking lot and load it in their truck but they said no, they could not sell him the floor model. It had to be in the box, so we could take it out of the box and then erect it in the yard to withstand the weather. It made no sense to me. But they have their rules. I then became pretty perved that they’d taken my money and could not produce the thing i technically now owned. They said it would be one more day and they’d get one shipped from a nearby city. I stayed on them and they followed through. Ironically, it ended up being the nearby city’s floor model. Idiots.
So he delivered it to my property. He wouldnt take any gas money so he just has my gratitude and thanks. He’s happily married and has a gaggle of adorable and outgoing children and here’s where my new policy about friends was hatched. Happily married people make good friends for me with already established boundaries that have little long-term use for me in daily life. They’re busy and interaction is kept brief and infrequent. Works well for my lifestyle.
My friend came from san antonio one sunday and we literally worked from sun up to an hour past sundown. We worked well together and she had many ideas that i hadnt thought of and vice versa. We had slightly different ways of looking at things. I was grateful when her idea genuinely solved a problem i hadnt considered or when she had a more efficient way of going about something but when i didnt like one of her ideas, i had a right to say “no i want to do it the way i had originally planned” and we did. Most of the time i did choose her way of doing it over the eay i had planned because it was an idea that i genuinely liked more than my own but there were a few things i wanted the way i wanted them and she never tried to change my mind. It was enjoyable working with her and we made a good team. I was surprised by how much we got done in one day. She was a hard worker and sometimes gave me the motivation to continue when my focus was waning. She was also good conversation. I dont think there’s anyone else on earth who could have stuck in that with me and got as much done as we did in one day because she thinks very similarly to me and we have very similar focus styles and she really came through for me in a way i cant fully explain my gratitude for with words. I think of that day and those hours building with her every time i walk in and out of that chicken pen and i know she gave me a christmas gift like no other this year. The gift of her time, presence, and patience. I cannot explain the relief that flooded my body once i realized the project was done. It was done, really done. This giant thing that had been looming over me that needed to get done, this impossible thing was done, and it was done to my original design so that when something broke or needed maintained or replaced i could gain easy access and have an independent method to handle that on my own. I was so beyond happy. I bought the remaining pavers the following day and moved the chickens into the new pen the following night. The coop is smaller than the old one and fits the pen better so the chickens have more room to run around. It will keep them healthier and give me more access to clean and maintain the coop and catch the chickens if they are injured or need medicated. I just keep thinking i am blessed to have her as a friend because we talk to each other on an infrequent basis but there is a knowing that we still have mutual respect for each other and are friends and if either one of us needs the other, we come through in a crisis. The person who delivered the pen is just a solid good person and a good christian who did a nice thing for someone he barely knows and wanted nothing in return. Over the course of the next couple months i set about reconstructing both my privacy and my independence and i began to get back into the familiar and cherished feeling of being alone. I enjoy and always have enjoyed solitude. I see people at work. That is enough.

The Chickens and Their Jack-O-Lantern

I saw a trend floating around the internet where you could take a screw driver and poke out the outline of a jack-o-lantern face and then give the pumpkin to your chickens and let them go to town carving a pumpkin for halloween. Wherever they could smell the contents of the gourd or pumpkin they would apparently peck there instead of in the section without started openings to the inside of the pumpkin. I was curious if it would work. I was actually sick one day and my best friend/neighbor dropped off a covid test she had run to the nearest town to get. She said she’d gotten me a big round present to go with it while she was in town at the store and she hoped it cheered me up a bit. When i got to where the grocery bag was hanging on the fence i saw a perfectly round pumpkin sitting nearby. She had gotten me a pumpkin so we could try the trend with the chickens.
I waited until i felt well and then saved it a few more days because i had a friend coming from san antonio to help me with a project for the chickens and i thought we could try the trend together. I took a Philips head screwdriver and she took a flathead screwdriver and we poked holes in the face design i had drawn onto the pumpkin with pen. Once we felt well had sufficient holes in the drawn on design of the pumpkin we set the big orange globe in the chicken pen and let them gather round to see what it was we’d given them. They very quickly found the holes in the front of the pumpkin and rosie led the charge in what would become a two day process to carve a jack-o-lantern via chicken beaks. They seemed to favor the side poked with the Philips head screwdriver. I decided next year we’d use exclusively Philips head screwdrivers to poke the design. They worked on it off and on for two days and i dare say they did a pretty sufficient job. Realizing i didnt have to do a thing but 2 minutes of work with a screwdriver to get a jack-o-lantern, i decided to make this joint project with the chickens an annual occurrence around halloween.

This Year’s Orb Weavers

Unfortunately it was an absolutely prolific breeding year for the praying mantises. This year’s praying mantises were almost exclusively male so hopefully next year will be a less prolific year for these iron fisted demons but this year it was a full time job killing 5 or 6 praying mantises a day just in the ones that had climbed up on the porch to try to behead the visible orb weavers i had sitting in their webs. Eventually every single one i knew of was beheaded and discarded in the grass beneath their web, the signature handiwork of the despicable praying mantises that eats their prey alive and squirming slowly, one bite at a time, and wastes everything but the brain. It was just too much of a job for me to keep these things at bay and eventually the ones on the porch, the greenhouse, the shed, and the carport fell prey to the relentless and ever present danger of hundreds of praying mantises.
After the first couple light freezes, the praying mantises seemed to show up less frequently and their numbers dropped off. This is when i found my second batch of spider buddies. There were 4. One got eaten, and then there were 3. One on the house porch, one on the greenhouse porch, and one on the well house door. Yesterday i found a sizable female praying mantis in the compost bucket sitting on the greenhouse porch stalking that spider quietly and hoping i wouldnt notice its head and arms peeking out of the orange home depot bucket. I got the salt canister out of the greenhouse and smashed it to death. For now, that spider is still alive and kicking but it is a full time job just keeping these buddies around in the environment we are living in. This town must have done something terrible long ago to be plagued with the amount of grasshoppers, locusts, katydids, ravens, scorpions, snakes, mice, poisonous frogs, and praying mantises it has because one town over there are regular, not biblical, amounts of these things. It’s a curious phenomenon how the populations are of reasonable ratio in one area and disproportionate amounts in another.

I should mention that the orb weavers on the porch have now put egg sacs in the kitchen window and the kitchen behind the sink 2 years in a row at this point and two of the spiders living in the kitchen actually made their own tiny egg sacs so i am not just a spider grandmother now but a great grandmother to spotted orb weaver babies that hatched in my kitchen… i have to carefully check and remove nearly microscopic orb weaver spiders from the blender, kitchen utensils, toaster oven, dish washing soap bottle, and sink before using them and they’ve webbed up nearly everything in the kitchen but the stove and 3 corners of the sink but i have decided to live in peaceful coexistence with them rather than serve eviction notices because i’d rather have the orb weavers than a clean kitchen and logically, the webbing is just how they hunt. To destroy it throws a monkey wrench into their ability to get something to eat. So, we have an agreement. I remove their webs from the stove, blender, and kitchen utensils. They put them everywhere else in the kitchen. They stick to the kitchen area and dont branch out. I try not to smoosh them accidentally and try my best to preserve their webs in areas of the kitchen i dont use daily and they eat all the fruit flies and moths that come in when i open the door.
I have to have some kind of boundary. Only orb weavers are allowed in the house. The grass and wolf spiders have to stay outside. But, its a good thing i live alone because a partner would not put up with half the kitchen consumed in webbing so that thousands of tiny orb weavers could survive the winter and not fall prey to praying mantises. They would not probably desire to live like me…half immersed in nature at all times to the point where we’re not sure how animal and how human i am just by looking at my dwelling.
Thoughts on Finances

I found this paragraph that i’d jotted down on an introspective day earlier this year.
“Jesus teaches us that there are things that are more important than money. 1. Love for thy fellow human being. 2. What is right and just in the eyes of the Lord. Both things are more important than money. Money makes this realm go round, but it is useless in the next. So each individual must decide what rules their heart; the rules of this realm or the next. i require money to maintain my existence here, yes, but it should not be the focal point of my decision making. What’s right and what’s loving should be my first priorities and what’s financially responsible a close second. Im not saying throw all your money to the wind or spend willy nilly on anything you see. Im just talking about priorities and wiring. After a while it changes the way you think about the world. You realize how impermanent every “thing” is. However, your actions start a chain reaction that will exist for generations. Your priorities will dictate what flavor of chain reaction your legacy ends up being during and after your time here on this earth. You can remind people of grace, jesus’ love, kindness, patience, and prayer, or you can remind people what a dog eat dog world they live in. Its up to you what mark you leave but however you live, a mark will be left.”
So far, in the 7 years i’ve lived on my property, i’ve lived according to that paragraph and the ideas behind it. Because i’ve had the opportunity to do so. This year, the value of the american dollar has dropped and not returned to its former worth. My salary has remained unchanged. I am realizing this is not a temporary state of being but the new norm. I cannot afford to add any more trees to the orchard. I cannot afford to erect any further structures, pens, or sheds. I cannot afford to buy any further clothes or scrubs. I cannot afford groceries. I have returned to the ration of two boxes of rice pasta and $90 worth of fedexed produce each week. no beans, no olives, no waffles, no cashews… the exciting food is over and the sustenance food is back. Its time to buckle down and budget like we’re back in the beginning of the pandemic and $5000 in debt because we have yo buy our own ppe because healthcare employers are corrupt and spend the federally allocated funds on corporate rather than providing the little people with much needed life preserving protection. But i digress. Next year christmas presents will be paper cards with well wishes rather than things. Next year food will be produce cooked from scratch rather than packaged meals. Next year i will focus on maintaining what i have rather than adding anything to the homestead. The slow walk to the latter half of the 20 year mortgage has begun a bit early simply because the american dollar is not worth as much as it used to be, so in that sense, the second half of my adjustable rate mortgage (the half that i can barely afford vs the half that i can swing comfortably) has begun 3 years early. My coworker said to me, “knowing what you know now i bet you wish you’d loved differently the past 7 years. I bet you wish you’d saved every penny and spent it on your own mortgage instead of us.” And the answer in my heart was immediate and deafening, a resounding “absolutely not.” Money is the root of all evil. When you begin making decisions based solely on the idea of keeping as much of it as possible, you become a bitter colder person who is farther away from God in your pursuit of this empty and meaningless thing. I am aware it holds value in the sense of i need it to survive financially in this realm, but in a cosmic or eternal sense, the paper and metal morsels are meaningless. The happiness, joy, and meaning that the acts on which i chose to spend the money i made over the past seven years brought to people around me, i wouldnt trade that. That made my heart rich, my soul rich, and i’d rather be rich in heart and soul than pocket any day. I am only sad that this time is over, that i must live differently moving forwards. I will lament the departure from and miss the days in which i could use the finances i earned to brighten another’s day or existence. It is no longer within my power to do so for others but i regret not the time in which it was and the decision to move on doing so. It was enjoyable to be part of the middle class for the time period in which i could swing it and now i will join the thousands who have descended into the lower class economically in the past few years. Perhaps one day in the future, when i’ve paid the mortgage off i will climb back up that ladder, or perhaps i never will. Perhaps this is the new norm for the rest of my life here. No one knows what the future holds. No one can accurately guess how much the economic uncertainties and financial predictions of the future will change for good or bad. All i know is that definitively my coworker is wrong about my feelings about the last 7 years of my life here. Ive lived according to my beliefs and principles and i would not go back and change it if i could. I have bought really individualized and exciting presents for all of the people important to me in my life this year and i am making sure to stop and enjoy the process of giving and seeing their faces as they realize what each gift is and how it will either bring them joy or solve a problem that has existed in their daily life…i know its the last time for a while that i will have the opportunity to produce this reaction in others and so i will relish the privilege of being able to have a front row seat to the sudden expression of joy. I will paste the memories into a photo album and store them in a drawer in my brain so that during christmases to come when i can only provide well wishes on paper cards, i have warm memories to revisit in the recesses of my mind. These are new times we are entering. I must budget differently to keep the house, but my thoughts on priorities and what is cosmically important have not changed. Cost of living is one thing and the cost of the way you live your life is another. One must keep these two separate in your mind.
Orthodontic Assholes and DIY Everything Because Humans are Assholes
I had braces at some point. Therefore i will need a set of retainers for the rest of my life. In anticipation of this fact i asked for them to make me two, which i was willing to pay for, considering that one would probably not last the entire span of my life. They refused. They told me if one broke i was to just come back in then and they’d make me a new one. So i left with just the one pair of retainers. Sure enough, 7 years later the top retainer cracked at the front teeth area and i had to come back in. So i asked for an identical retainer and they said “oh no, we cant copy the retainer…we can only make a new mold of your teeth and make a new retainer from that.” And i said that my teeth had already turned because i hadnt worn the retainer in several days and i wanted the total benefit of the braces i paid $4000 dollars for. I didnt want a less than straight retainer. I didnt want to go backwards. I told them they could help me if they wanted to but they didnt see it that way. We still dont see eye to eye. If uou can only make a mold from an indentation of teeth…pour plaster in my old retainer…then break the retainer off of it once its dried, then make a retainer mold around the hard plaster “teeth” gotten out of my old retainer, and we have a blueprint for a new retainer. They were not into extra steps. So i paid $4000 dollars and every time my retainer breaks i gotta have slightly more crooked teeth. I mean its criminal, and also a healthy dose of stupidity because even with a drugstore fix it kit and an advanced version of play-dough…i can do better than this solution. Well life is unfair and professionals dont listen and i gotta do everything my **** self so i lined the broken retainer up the way it used to fit and used a denture repair serum i bought off amazon to meld the retainer back together. The problem was that the box specified it was highly flammable, highly toxic material that wasnt meant to have prolonged contact with one’s skin and it was meant to be a very temporary fix and you should call someone immediately for a more long term denture repair. It said all over the box that this stuff can cause cancer and that once you opened the liquid chemical and mixed it with the powder you’d have roughly two seconds before it hardened so put it in the freezer for half an hour before hand to slow the process and dont get the vapors from the liquid in your eyes and do it in a well ventilated area. They werent kidding. I think the dogs and i both got high that day because the tiny house bathroom is not exactly a well ventilated area but oh well. With roughly two seconds for mix and application i didnt have time to think about or consider toxic fumes. I just had to get the job done. So now i have this toxic pink repair cement on the outside of my retainer but i dont really want it against my gums and lip while i sleep. So i bought some air dry clay. See if it needs baked it will melt the retainer but air dry clay will just dry in place in 2 to 3 days if left out. So i covered the toxic pink denture repair cement in air dry clay and set it on the counter. A popular internet search engine claims most brands are non-toxic and safe for general use by both kids and adults. So now the pink cancer causing stuff is encapsulated in the more benign stuff and my retainer is repaired and functional again and i can get my teeth as straight as they were when i was finished with the braces. Should i have had to go to these lengths? Probably not. They could have made a tooth mold from the old retainer and then made a new retainer from the tooth mold, but they are assholes and dont care if you paid $4000 dollars and have progressively more crooked teeth every time your retainer breaks throughout the rest of your life. So thats why they make denture repair serum and air dry clay. I’ll just have to pull down in the middle instead of bending from the ends to remove the retainer in the mornings so as not to crack the clay.

Update: the air dry clay was not water proof so required sealed. Now it is waterproof. Also: Dont get discount paint brushes. They will start shedding the moment you get them wet and before you know it you’ll just be holding a stick with a sink full of little hairs.
Antique Turkish Pepper Grinder

I just dont understand why we bother inventing newer and less efficient ways of doing things. Does your pepper grinder render peppercorns ground this finely? All i had to do was turn the little handle at the top and it made pepper dust.

Vegan Vodka Pasta Sauce

It was delicious and there was no cream!
