Lately the temperature at night has been hovering right around freezing and ive been leaving the greenhouse lights on overnight to keep it a bit warmer in there considering theres two open wall vents that let the outdoor air in even when i close the windows. That means the roses in there have had 24 hour grow lights on them. They’re essentially getting the equivalent of “more sun”. I knew we needed to put the lights on chains and drop them down closer to the plants but my neighbor who was helping me with the project at the time said the plants would get plenty of light from the ceiling. They dont get enough light as it turns out and the plants were all stunted this year. I began making plans to buy chain from sutherlands and lower all the lights for next year. After 4 trips they finally restocked enough chain for me to have 14 seven foot lengths of chain and i can now get a ladder and drop all the lights down so that they are closer to the plants. One night i walked into the greenhouse and found that my maroon rose was not pink. It was a deep maroon, as intended. I realized, if i could get these lights lowered, i could potentially see maroon roses all the time. It was a treat. I knew the rose plant had been receiving more light under 24 hour grow lights but this was not good for the plant at regular because every living thing needed to have a period of rest and repair eventually. I could only do this on cold nights. I would do better next year, after i lowered the lights. Next year would be better.
