During the high winds, my neighbors who have 12 bee boxes lost two of their colonies. I didnt know this but two of their boxes had tipped over, dumping all the bees. They werent sure where they had gone but i was. There were suddenly around 800 bees in my yard for about two or three days. they took over the chicken water, all 4 dog waters, and the stock tank. They completely clogged up and broke the solar powered fountain in the stock tank. The dogs couldnt get water it was so thick with drinking, pulsating bees. The dogs, unbeknownst to me, were chasing and eating the bees. I found this out when sili threw up 20 wriggling bees all over the floor of the tiny house. I was worried she would get stung in the throat and have it swell shut or the dying bees would signal an alarm and all the other hundreds of bees would attack trying to save their brethren. I put the dogs in the house until i could remedy the problem. Nothing i tried worked to deter them and most things were out of the question because they were also toxic for dogs. I contacted the woman in town who has been here the longest and knows everybody and asked her if she could put me in touch with the owner of the bee boxes across the way from my property. She did. It was a couple who lived one town over and used the land solely for bees. The husband of the couple was the cousin of the woman i had called. I thanked her for putting me in touch and then called the number and left a message. He called back and they were the nicest of people. They said they’d put more pheromones in their water source to draw the bees over there but bees will travel 3 miles for water so they may or may not be his. I said i’d dump the stock tank to give the dogs a smaller area of water to defend and make less of a draw for the bees. They also suggested i use neem oil to deter the bees from the dog water as its not considered toxic for dogs. We did a combination of these things and 24 hours later we were back to the regular fifty or so visiting bees who stayed mostly to the chicken water. That was A LOT of bees. I will say, for me and the dogs never being stung, they were exceptionally docile bees. I promised my neighbor i’d always have some potted house plants in early spring to put out for the bees to have something to pollinate when they wake up. I texted him pictures of the flowering plants i had at the moment. Its always a blessing to have friendly and sensible neighbors. I appreciate them greatly.
