Mexican/Texas Persimmons

The ants eat these things down to nothing but a hollow shell moments before peak ripeness. I began picking them when black with a green ring around the top and then leaving them on the counter face down to protect from flies until fully ripened. They have greasy sticky flesh under a paper thin skin. Id say at least fifty percent of the fruit is seeds and the edible part, you suck off the seeds and then spit them out. Whats left resembles something you might find in a spit cup, but i find the description “tastes like prunes with a hint of licorice” to be very accurate. They are pretty good and its a new source of nutrition on the land, as long as you dont eat too many at one time. They will have a laxative effect if you do. Im excited to see what other trees end up being fruit bearing females in the years to come when they get tall enough to flower.
