With the wet weather and high humidity of the past week i have had to wrench the chicken coop door open to collect eggs during brief drier spells: every two to four days. When it is wet the wood door swells and cements itself to the frame. today i collected after not being able to get in the coop for two days and there were 14 eggs. Earlier in the week when it dried out a bit briefly one afternoon i tried the door and was able to get in before the rain started up again. I hadnt been in in maybe 4 days and there were 26 eggs in there. I was amazed that pullet that was egg eating didnt just have herself a meal. One of the chickens is broody right now so it is very possible she protected the eggs until i could get in there due to the weather. I really expected to find nothing but shell and egg white remnants. Instead i was greeted with 2 dozen and 2 eggs.
There is one pullet that is laying medium brown eggs, which makes me happy because Rosie is my only hen that makes medium brown eggs and she’s about to reach chicken menopause so its good to know someone else will carry on the tradition. Although, rosie’s eggs are speckled with dark brown spots 70 percent of the time. I dont figure the pullet will be able to do that. nobody can replace Rosie. Rosie is rosie. But, its fun to have a bit of variety in the cream colored eggs by throwing in a medium brown here and there in each carton. I am very pleased with the development as it seemed before this week that all the pullets were going to be cream colored egg layers.
