New Growth

Over the next month everything began to come out of its winter dormancy and begin producing new leaves and flowers. The new trees that looked like bare sticks when i bought them produced buds and sprouted leaves. The old trees came back as well. Even the muscat grape vine returned. It was the last to show signs of life but once it sprouted leaves they just kept coming. Mulberries appeared on the mulberry tree and blackberries began to grow as well. As the trees decided winter was over so too did the snakes and scorpions. I was a little late to realize winter was truly over and had some close calls with rattlesnakes. Ultimately i realized it was no longer winter and watering the trees after sundown when they were out hunting field mice was now a terrible idea. If i did do this i needed to wear boots, not flats, and i needed to bring a lantern and remain vigilant for movement and camouflaged scales in the grass or the chicken pen.

My original pear tree has never flowered. I believe it was not old enough to bloom. This year it made its first little cluster of white flowers. Unfortunately it did that 1 week before i planted the Moonglow pear tree, so not much chance of pears this year. However, it tells me the tree has hit maturity and depending on how old the Moonglow tree is, there’s hope for future years.
