The buzzards are done with it. There’s been a couple heavy rains since it was killed so the fur and the hide got soggy and matted and now it just stinks to high heaven. The remaining skin shriveled and revealed an impressive set of pearly white teeth.

Further Update: The carcass has had a little bit more time to be picked away at by the buzzards and raccoons and the skull is now completely visible. I’m not sure what the structure of it says about its genetic makeup but anyone that does know please feel free to comment.

Those are impressive teeth, but not impressive enough to have prevented whatever happened.
I asked a veterinarian friend of mine about how to tell a dog skeleton from a coyote skeleton. His memory (I didn’t have him bother to look it up in his books) is that dog skulls have obvious bulges over the eye sockets while coyote skulls do not have this trait…..not that you want to go, especially down wind, and look…..
I suppose that the ants are now busy with the carcass.
Thanks! I will use this info. I am going to let it dry out a bit and i will examine again. Theres no carcass clean up service out here so i dont anticipate the bones will move out of sight any time soon.
