Sula’s Supper

I didn’t have Sula in mind when i emptied last week’s shavings from the pullet enclosure in the house and filled it with fresh ones. However, if there is a morsel of food somewhere, she finds it. She has been eating the discarded chicken scratch that the crazy birds kick out of the enclosure for years. Now that i have young chickens and i have to empty their soiled shavings somewhere (outside), Sula has taken it upon herself to vacuum up any pullet crumbles left in between the shavings. She is actually doing us a great favor. If she eats it, it wont be there to attract field mice and raccoons. She mulls through all the shavings and takes what she wants and then while doing so, spreads them out so they can dry and become a sort of yellow mulch. It’s not forever, but until Christmas we’ll be having to find something to do with all these poopy wood shavings. Maybe the dung beetles will take the poop and the deer will take the crumbles. All i know is that anything equalling less chance of raccoons is a good thing to do. Sula is having herself a snack and Sili and Cashew are staying late in the dog run so she can eat in peace. They’re busy barking away at her but she doesnt care. She’s used to them. She’s back to hanging out by herself tonight. For the past year she stuck pretty close to Little One. I wonder if she misses her. I hope that next year she has a little fawn to look after and i hope it is a daughter so it can stay with her once its grown.
